Factors affecting placental size in beef cattle: Maternal and fetal influences

نویسندگان

چکیده

Our objectives were to determine the effects of dam body condition score (BCS), age dam, and calf sex on placental size relationships between weight (BW) with size. Expelled placentas at birth collected from crossbred beef heifers cows during four experiments (n = 22 39/experiment). Placentas deemed complete by visual inspection dissected; dry weights determined for cotyledonary intercotyledonary tissues. Mixed linear models used individually main peripartum BCS category [Thin (<5), Moderate (=5), or Fleshy (≥6)], [Primiparous (2 yr), Young (3–4 Mature (≥5 yr)], measures. Correlations characteristics prepartum BW, gestation length, Thin dams had lower (P ≤ 0.05) cotyledonary, total placental, average cotyledon greater efficiency (calf BW/placental weight) than moderate fleshy dams. Intercotyledonary was < 0.01) in thin compared smaller 0.04) BW Primiparous young mature dams, yet unaffected 0.17). Male calves heavier females, there no differences ≥ 0.59) weights. Calf heart girth positive correlations shoulder rump length abdominal weak all Dam flank a correlation BW. Gestation 0.02) weight. Number cotyledons not correlated 0.28) any offspring characteristics. In conclusion, these data suggest that both maternal affected positively correlated, but it is still unknown which controls signals growth other.

Factors affecting time intervals in parturition in beef cattle.

Birth traits of 68 Angus and 49 Charolais x Angus calves sired by four Angus and seven Charolais bulls, respectively, were studied. Timed intervals during the calving process were compared between breed of sire groups. The Charolais sired calves required an average of 3.7 rain longer from the first appearance of the water bag until the feet were first visible; 8.1 rain longer (P<.01) from the t...

Factors affecting beef cattle producer perspectives on feed efficiency.

To establish the basis for implementation of a producer education program, a social assessment of the willingness and barriers to adoption of a measure of feed efficiency in beef cattle [residual feed intake (RFI)] was conducted. A 35-question mailed survey was sent to 1,888 producers acquired from the stratified random sample of the Idaho Cattle Association member list (n = 488), Red Angus Ass...

The LOR is an index of buffer recycling/kg DMI and rdOM is an index of VFA production/kg DMI. The compliled data also included dry matter intake (DMI = 2.81 ± .87 % LW) and Acetate/Propionate ratio (A/P = 3.18 ± 0.89). Data were analyzed using GLM proc...

Prenatal and postnatal maternal contributions to reproductive, maternal, and size-related traits of beef cattle.

Brown Swiss-Hereford (BS-H) reciprocal cross embryos were transferred to BS and H recipient cows and Red Poll-Angus (RP-A) reciprocal cross embryos were transferred to RP and A recipient cows to estimate the relative contributions of ovum cytoplasm and uterine influences to prenatal maternal effects. Calves resulting from embryo transfers (ET) were weaned early (3 to 5 d). Reciprocal cross mati...
